Breastfeeding a must: Mayor
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra has urged mothers of newborns to start breastfeeding their infants within the first hour of birth as a mother’s milk contains all the nutrients required for the healthy development of a child.
Speaking at a function organised to mark the beginning of World Breastfeeding Week at the Girdhar Lal Maternity Hospital here on Wednesday, the Mayor urged the medical and paramedical staff of various hospitals, dispensaries and maternity and child welfare centres to create awareness among new mothers to adopt breastfeeding.
Chairman of the Medical Relief and Public Health Committee of the MCD V.K. Monga said the main objective of the World Breastfeeding Week was to sensitise mothers about the importance of breastfeeding.
The Chairman also said the 160 maternity and child welfare centres would organise various programmes, competitions and interactive sessions to raise awareness on the issue.
The mothers would also be trained in the correct manner to breast feed their babies.
Dr. Monga said breastfeeding would reduce infant mortality considerably and also reduce incidence of malnutrition, diarrhoea and growth disorders.
