School accountant arrested

NEW DELHI: A 38-year-old accountant-cum-cashier of Sumermal Jain Public School at Janakpuri here has been arrested for alleged embezzlement of Rs.85 lakh.

According to the police, Mahavir Prasad, who accepted fees and cheques in favour of the school, issued cash receipts bearing the same number to two or more students and credited only one to the school account. He had been committing the fraud since 1996, but it was detected only in May 2005, the police said. A Maruti Zen car and several documents have been seized.
