MANGALORE: The Mangalore University All College Students’ Association has alleged that some autonomous colleges affiliated to the university are not conducting elections to students’ councils in a democratic manner. Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Sumith Melroy, president of the association, and Mithun Rai, former president, charged that those colleges were appointing the top scorers in examinations as office-bearers of students’ councils. Thus, the managements of those colleges were depriving students of their democratic rights. The association had complained about this to the Government. In future, if the managements did not conduct elections in a democratic manner, the association would launch an agitation, they warned. Mr. Melroy said election of office-bearers of the association for 2007-08 would be held at T.V. Ramana Pai hall in the city on August 11. Ivan D’Souza, a lawyer and former member of the Syndicate of the university, would be the election officer. Three members from each college could contest for the election. They are president, vice-president and secretary of students’ councils of colleges. The nominations should be filed with the election officer before 10 a.m. on August 11.According to reports received by the association, students’ councils had been elected in about 80 colleges for 2007-08. But some colleges were reluctant to constitute the councils, Mr. Melroy said.
