NEW DELHI: In the light of recent allegations of physical abuse against a male teacher at one of its school in Mangolpuri, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has decided to employ only female teachers in the girls’ schools it runs across the city. At a meeting of the MCD Standing Committee here on Wednesday, Chairman Vijender Gupta said henceforth only women teachers would be employed in girls’ schools. The Chairman also decided to relocate all male teachers to boys’ schools in keeping with the opinion of all the members of the Committee. Mr. Gupta said the process of segregation of male and female teachers would be time-bound and directed the Municipal Commissioner and the Education Department to initiate the process. “This is just a minor administrative reshuffle because only 150-200 male teachers are teaching in girls’ schools. We are not sacking them, just transferring them to different schools. The entire exercise should be completed within two months,” he said. The decision was followed by a protest by the MCD Teachers’ Association with their spokesperson Ram Chandra Dabas saying the civic body was adopting a policy of gender bias.
