CHENNAI: Efforts are on to fill the remaining 220 vacancies of veterinary doctors across the State, Minister for Animal Husbandry Geetha Jeevan said on Wednesday. Talking to reporters after taking part in a function organised at Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) to distribute the first lot of letters for admission to various veterinary courses (2007-08), she said 250 doctors had been appointed to the newly-sanctioned posts, and the remaining vacancies were likely to be filled in six months. The two-day counselling for candidates seeking admission to the government veterinary colleges in Chennai, Tuticorin and Namakkal began on Wednesday, with 320 candidates attending the sessions. The total seat strength is 281 (226 for various veterinary science and animal husbandry disciplines, 35 for fisheries and 20 for food processing technology). According to Ms. Jeevan, the State would take up with the Centre the issue of resumption of egg exports that were suspended after the outbreak of bird flu. No case of bird flu was reported in Tamil Nadu, but all preventive measures were being taken. Farmhouses had been directed to maintain hygiene and joint directors of the Department were instructed to monitor the situation daily. The Minister said the Rs. 95-lakh centenary complex coming up on the Madras Veterinary College campus at Vepery would be commissioned in six months. The building would house world-class facilities. Earlier, distributing admission letters to the top five students from the first lot of candidates, Ms. Jeevan said it was encouraging to see that more women were enrolling for various veterinary courses. Last year, women accounted for nearly 50 per cent of the intake.
