Panel to find out cause of derailments

S. Vydhianathan

Experts’ committee will also recommend remedial measures

CHENNAI: Southern Railway has constituted an experts’ committee to find out what caused derailments on successive days, Monday and Tuesday, near the Chennai Central station.

The committee will identify the cause and recommend remedial measures.

An engineering department official of the Southern Railway told The Hindu on Wednesday that the administration had taken steps to strengthen the track at the ‘neck point,’ where the derailment took place.

The entire section was replaced and packed with more ballasts.

The official said all incoming and outgoing trains and empty coaches from the yard had to necessarily cross the point. Even a minor accident could paralyse train operations in Chennai Central.

Rs. 300-crore plan

The administration had prepared a Rs. 300-crore plan for replacing the point.

The entire track alignment to and from Chennai Central had to be replaced, which was a major task.
