Manpower training for engineering units

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Industrial Infrastructure Association, which is implementing infrastructure projects for the foundries and engineering units here, will also focus on addressing manpower shortage faced by the units.

According to its president, G. Rajendran, the association will embark on training and skill improvement programmes soon.

The education and training centre established on Avarampalayam Road here will be a common facility to cater to the needs of the pump, motor and foundry sectors.

It will be a one-stop shop for process and performance improvements for the foundry industry, skill development through on the job training, end to end pump testing, motor testing, product die and mould centre and floor space for exhibitions.

The Rs. 30 crore centre will be inaugurated by mid-August.

The common infrastructure works at the foundry complexes at Arasur, Kallapalayam and Manickampalayam will be completed soon and these works were on at a total cost of Rs. 22 crore.

Speaking at annual general meeting of the association, Mr. Rajendran said Rs. 15 crore more would go in for the common infrastructure planned and these would be completed by the end of 2007.

An international field visit and a trade fair visit were also proposed to give the Coimbatore manufacturers an insight into world class technologies. The domestic pump and motor industry had registered a 10 per cent growth last year as against 2004-2005.

The exports were worth nearly Rs. 80 crore and the foundries had achieved 25 per cent growth in the last two years. Mr. Rajendran was confident of achieving the performance targets envisioned in the project for the foundry and pumpset industry here by creating the required common facilities.
