Col. Vasanth cremated

BANGALORE: The mortal remains of Col. V. Vasanth, who died in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday in an encounter with militants, were cremated at the Kalpalli Crematorium here on Wednesday with full military honours.

The former Chief Minister M. Veerappa Moily, Minister for Health and Family Welfare R. Ashok and MP Tejaswini Sriramesh were present. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Chief of the Army and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Headquarters Southern Command. Brig. Clement Samuel, Commander of Karnataka and Kerala Sub-Area, senior serving and retired army and police officials, and Air Deccan Chairman G.R. Gopinath paid floral tributes. A group of soldiers from Maratha Light Infantry Regiment Centre fired three rounds in the air and reversed their arms as a mark of respect.
