Some lecturers have been working as guest lecturers for ten years and still getting Rs. 100 per hour
COIMBATORE: Guest lecturers of the arts colleges in Tamil Nadu have urged the State Government to make them permanent teachers. According to a release, there are 2,100 such lecturers in the State. Some of them have been working as guest lecturers for even ten years and still getting paid Rs. 100 per hour. Engaging classes for 80 to 90 hours fetched them a maximum of Rs. 4,000 as monthly income. Election manifesto
Their allegation was that the DMK Government promised to make them permanent in its election manifesto. But, now the same Government shunned their demand citing reasons of lack of eligibility and inexperience, the release said. In this scenario, it had introduced the shift system in colleges and employed retired teachers with a pay of Rs. 8,000. The guest lecturers had organised many protests and demonstrations. But, the Government had not heeded to their demands. The lecturers claim that the Government had promised to give them priority in the Teachers Recruitment Board examinations. They also allege that a No Objection Certificate was being denied to them to pursue their doctoral studies. Opportunity
Without a Ph. D. degree they did not have an opportunity to enter the TRB examination with high marks. They have appealed to the Government to provide them job security by removing the ‘guest’ from their designations and ensuring a monthly income of Rs. 8,000, till they were made permanent.
