March turns violent

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: A march taken out by activists of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) in protest against the delay in supply of textbooks to schools and the education policies of the State Government turned violent here on Thursday. The police resorted to a lathicharge to disperse the activists.

The march to the District Education Office began at 12 noon. It was inaugurated by District Congress Committee president A.A. Shukoor. The activists tried to enter the office compound by jumping over the barricade put up by the police. Several KSU activists, including the Union’s district committee S. Sarath, were injured in the lathi-charge and were arrested. The injured were admitted to the Alappuzha General Hospital.

The KSU would hold State-wide strikes on Friday in protest against the incident.
