New premises for General Hospital

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: The District Hospital, upgraded as a General Hospital, has shifted to the erstwhile premises of the Alappuzha Town Medical College.

The outpatient and inpatient wings of the new General Hospital have also started functioning on its new premises. The hospital is expected to be fully functional in a couple of weeks, District Medical Officer N.N. Murali said.

The upgrading of the district hospital into a general hospital was pending for a long time and finally gathered steam after public representatives, including MLA K.C. Venugopal took up the issue with the authorities.

The General Hospital will have 200 beds, an increase of 30 beds from the district hospital’s 170. The additional space available for the operation theatre complex would enable five surgeries to be conducted simultaneously, Dr. Murali said. Similarly, the vast premises of the former medical college have enabled the authorities to allot more space to all departments. One of the major beneficiaries of the space would be the paediatric wing, which can now accommodate 40 children instead of the 15 that it could admit till now.

In the meanwhile, the former premises of the District Hospital at the beach will accommodate the DMO’s office on first floor while the ground floor will be transformed into an extension of the nearby Women and Child Hospital, for which Rs.3.5 crore was sanctioned recently.

The emergency and casualty wings of the Alappuzha Medical College, which were yet to be shifted to the new Medical College premises at Vandanam, will continue to function along with the General Hospital though the latter has a separate entrance and a separate casualty wing as well.
