CHENNAI: The Washermen Welfare Board has decided not to collect registration or renewal fee from washermen if they wanted to register with it.
The board, which met here on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Labour Minister T.M. Anbarasan, reviewed the welfare schemes announced by the Government and expressed satisfaction at their implementation. The 17-member board has the Labour Minister as its chairman, with five official members and 11 non-official members.
Labour Commissioner A. Sukumaran told The Hindu that so far 39,838 persons had registered and the board disbursed Rs 22.51 lakh to its members.
Family pension
Apart from education grant to wards of the members, the board was giving a monthly pension of Rs. 400 to the members who had attained 60 years of age, Rs. 15,000 in case of natural death of members, funeral expenses and marriage assistance to the members’ families.
