CHICKBALLAPUR: Till now a sub-divisional headquarters in Kolar district, Chickballapur is all set to become a district headquarters soon. The Government, which gave the nod for creating two new districts, Ramanagaram being the other, some time ago, is scheduled to notify the formation of Chickballapur district on Sunday. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy is expected to inaugurate it at a public function here on Independence Day thus fulfilling a long cherished dream of the people of this region. As the countdown begins, Chickballapur is getting ready to embrace the new status and a new situation. All arrangements are being made for the occasion. Both government and private buildings, which were to house the new offices of the new district administration are being spruced up. Subodh Yadav, special officer for the designated new district, is busy holding consultations with senior officers. He held meetings at Kolar and Chickballapur to chalk out plans for the smooth running of the new administration. He has sought a list of requirements from the officers of the departments concerned. District in-charge secretary Tangaraj, in-charge Deputy Commissioner Sooryanarayan, Superintendent of Police B. Dayanand, Chickballapur MLA S.M. Muniyappa and others are involved in the process. Files and documents to be transferred from Kolar district to the new dispensation are being scrutinised and reviewed. According to sources, 68 district-level offices will start functioning on day one. Some of them will be accommodated in government buildings. The others will work in rented private buildings. A sprawling building of the Sericulture Department at Chadulpur near Chickballapur has been identified to house the Deputy Commissioner’s and zilla panchayat offices. While the Deputy Commissioner’s office will be housed in the first floor, the second and the third floors are reserved for the zilla panchayat. Repair, partitioning and painting of the buildings are in full swing. Resolution
Meanwhile, a meeting attended by Mr. Muniyappa, taluk panchayat president S.Y. Mariyappa, Congress leader Narayanaswamy, Janata Dal (S) leader K.V. Nagaraj and others adopted a resolution urging the Government to construct a district administration complex in the city. The place which houses the Assistant Commissioner’s office, Public Works Department office, the taluk panchayat, Assistant Commissioner’s quarters, Public Works Department quarters has been suggested as suitable for the complex. All these are about 100 years old and are in dilapidated condition. They should be demolished to build the district administration complex, it was advised. This would be convenient for the citizens, the meeting felt. Infrastructure
Carved out from Kolar district, Chickballapur will be the 29th district of the State. It comprises six taluks — Chickballapur, Bagepalli, Chintamani, Gudibande, Siddlaghatta and Gowribidnur. The Government has sanctioned Rs. 64 crore for infrastructure development in the new district. A sum of Rs. 21.16 crore has been earmarked for the salaries of the staff from August 2007 to March 2008, special officer Subodh Yadav has said. A sum of Rs. 11.75 crore would be spent on purchasing furniture and vehicles for various departments, he added. It was decided to upgrade the 100-bed Civil Hospital at Chickballapur to a 250-bed district hospital. A list of 60 posts of officer has been announced by the Government.
