Three-lakh birds culled

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: With the culling of nearly three-lakh poultry birds, the Government on Thursday declared that culling of poultry around bird flu-affected Chinmeirong village in Manipur had been completed.

Culling was undertaken within a 5 km radius around Chinmeirong which had been notified as a bird flu affected village last week after a flock of 132 birds died from the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza.

The Government said disposal of birds and infected materials was also completed within the 5-km zone on Wednesday. There have been no fresh cases of ‘unusual mortality’ in poultry or any human infection.

Thirty-four Rapid Response Teams were deployed for undertaking the culling operation. The Department of Animal Husbandry, Health, Imphal Municipality and Deputy Commissioners of Imphal East and West would be involved in the process of clean-up and disinfection.

Besides culling of birds, 27,269 eggs and 23,490 kg feed were also destroyed.

The district administration has informed people about the exercise through the public address system. .
