Monsoon likely to revive

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: There is some good news on the monsoon front. The India Meteorological Department on Thursday announced that the system could revive over the next two days bringing an end to a fortnight-long weak phase.

In a press release, the IMD said current meteorological conditions and interpretation of various numerical weather prediction models suggested a revival of the monsoon activity with a south-ward shift of the monsoon trough. The country had been facing a weak monsoon for the past two weeks as the trough stayed put near the foothills of the Himalayas after moving there around July 15.

An IMD spokesperson said the monsoon was likely to revive over Central India and adjoining peninsular region, with the formation of a low-pressure area system over north-west Bay of Bengal. The system was likely to form around August 4 and subsequently become more marked and move slowly in a north-westerly direction.

Heavy rainfall warning

Under this scenario, enhanced rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls are likely over north Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Chhattisgarh during August 4 to 7.

The enhanced rainfall felt was likely to subsequently shift to Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and south Rajasthan during August 8 to 11.

The spokesperson warned that the region encompassing Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan and Goa was particularly likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall of over 25 cm during a 24 hour period on August 10 and 11.

There were, he said, also indications that the system would be followed by another low pressure area over north-west Bay of Bengal, resulting in a fresh round of active rainfall over Central India and adjoining peninsular region from August 11 onward.

Subsequent to the new developments, rainfall activity over the north-eastern States and the northern plains are likely to become subdued and remain so till mid-August, he added.
