Maoist Minister quits Koirala Cabinet

Ameet Dhakal

KATHMANDU: Maoist leader Matrika Yadhav resigned as the Minister for Forest and Land Conservation on Thursday.

He said he was resigning because he did not receive cooperation from the Cabinet and Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala. A source close to Mr. Yadhav said he was resigning mainly because the Home Ministry did not cooperate with him in arresting smugglers who trafficked in red sanders, and also because the Government failed to make public the whereabouts of people who “disappeared” during the turbulent times in the country before the Maoist rebels joined the mainstream.

However, party sources said Mr. Yadhav was resigning due to his growing differences with party chairman Prachanda.

The central leader of the Maoists, Barsa Man Pun, said Mr. Yadhav did not consult the party before resigning. Mr. Yadhav, a politburo member of CPN (Maoist), is also president of Maoists’ wing, Madhesi Mukti Morcha.
