60 volunteers clean seven temples in Kanyakumari

NAGERCOIL: The ‘New Clean Movement,’ organised by the Selfless Movement Improving Life Everywhere (SMILE), has evoked good response in Kanyakumari.

On Wednesday, about 60 volunteers of the Chennai-based voluntary organisation cleaned seven temples, including the Nagaraja temple here, culminating the week-long temple-cleaning campaign in the district.

Last week, they undertook the cleaning of six temples, four of them in and around Nagercoil including the Bhagavathi Amman temple in Kanyakumari, the Thanu Malayan temple in Suchindrum, the Azhagammai temple in Vadiveeswaram, the Thiruvazhmaaraban temple in Thirupathissram, the Neeelakandaswamy temple in Padmanabhapuram and the Kuraguru Swami temple in Velimalai.

The team, equipped with proper equipment, undertook removal of cobwebs from all mandapams, sweeping and cleaning of the temple premises, cleaning and polishing of brass and copper puja items and removal of oil stains.

C.N. Paramasivam, founder, SMILE, said: “We were pleased to have got the opportunity to clean the temples in the Nagercoil region. Our motto is to offer selfless voluntary service. We neither collect nor donate cash.”

SMILE volunteers can choose their area of activity. They are also involved in blood donation, distribution of old clothes, organising free dental, medical, eye and veterinary camps as well as free cataract surgery.
