Kakinada: The area under paddy cultivation in the district will be going up this year by 15,000 hectares additionally with the water getting released from Pushkara lift irrigation scheme, thus taking the total paddy area to 2,39,444 hectares. Of the total 24,000 hectares of area getting water from Pushkara during this month, 9,000 hectares would be covered by crops other than paddy. Contrary to last year, the seasonal conditions have been fairly good till now, with timely rains filling up all the reservoirs. As against normal rainfall of 351 mms during June and July, the district has received 426.9 mms rain thus registering 21.6 per cent excess rainfall. The rainfall has been fairly widespread and the agricultural operations commenced well in advance. With the Godavari canals in full and the reservoirs of Thandava, Pampa, Yeleru and Maddigadda receiving water to maximum level, the ryots were able to complete the paddy transplantations to the extent of 80 per cent by July end. The deputy director of agriculture I. Rama Krishnamurthy told The Hindu on Thursday that the total paddy transplantations would be completed by August 7. As a gainst 2,24,444 hectares of normal paddy area, already 1,90,000 hectares was covered by transplantation. Ram Krishnamurthy said that the area under Tapioca had gone up from 16,800 hectares to 24,800 hectares this year owing to ryots preferring crop diversion. This has resulted in reduction of area under cotton from 10,468 hectares to a mere 7,400 hectares. Not only the paddy transplantations, he said, but also the other crops such as pulses, gingelly, chillies, cotton, sugar cane and tapioca sowings also completed well in advance this year. He said under paddy, the cultivation of Swarna variety had gone up to 80 per cent now.
