Proposal to also be submitted to Prime Minister Protesters in Gulbarga urged to withdraw stir
BANGALORE: The State Government will request the Union Government to establish a Central university in Gulbarga, Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy said on Thursday. In a reply to the demand made by Congress members, he said there had been no official communication from the Centre on the matter. The State Government too not held any formal discussions with the Union Ministry for Human Resource Development on the issue. The Minister said National Knowledge Commission chairman Sam Pitroda had recommended to the Centre to set up Central universities in various parts of the State and appealed for the withdrawal of the protest launched in Gulbarga demanding that a Central university be established there. Protest continues
The Hyderabad Karnataka Janapara Sangharsha Samiti and the Gulbarga Central University Establishment Action Committee are protesting against Mr. Shankaramurthy’s reported stand that such a university should be set up in Mysore. The Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Gulbarga University Postgraduate Teachers’ Association have also demanded that the university be set up in Gulbarga. Home Minister M.P. Prakash told the House that a proposal in this regard would be submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the visit to Bangalore on Friday. 30 varsities planned
Earlier, Leader of the Opposition N. Dharam Singh said the Prime Minister had announced that 30 Central universities would be set up in the country with at least one in each State. He appealed to the Government to ensure that the university came up in Gulbarga. B.R. Patil (JD-S) said the Nanjundappa committee report on regional imbalances had recommended the establishment of a Central university in Gulbarga. The Hyderabad Karnataka region, comprising five districts, had been identified as most backward with respect to social, economic and educational indicators, he said and opposed the proposal to upgrade the existing Gulbarga University as a Central university.
