MADURAI. Minister for Rural Industries Pongalur N. Palanisamy on Thursday reviewed development works in the southern districts at the Collectorate here.
He held discussions with senior officials on the progress made on various fronts and implementation of the Prime Minister’s Self-Employment Scheme. Of the 28,188 people identified for sanction of loan to the tune of Rs. 117.3 crore in 2006-07, 25,033 had already received a total advance of Rs. 98.16 crore. In the southern districts, 6,735 people benefited from the scheme.
Mr. Palanisamy said that the quantum of loan for industrial houses had been enhanced from Rs. 2 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh. The target (number of beneficiaries) for the current financial year had been fixed at 28,700. The Government had taken steps to increase the number of industrial estates in the State. A sum of Rs. 70 lakh was sanctioned for establishing a permanent exhibition at Kanyakumari, he added. The Tamil Nadu Small Industries Corporation Chairman, K.S. Sripathi, the Sericulture Commissioner, Harmandar Singh, and the Madurai Collector, S.S. Jawahar, spoke, an official release said.
