RAMANATHAPURAM: The much-awaited Rameswaram-Manamadurai broad gauge section will be opened for traffic on Monday.

United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi will flag off the inaugural special at Rameswaram.

The inauguration of the important railway section assumes significance in the view of the conversion of Pamban Bridge across the sea between Pamban and Mandapam.

The Railway authorities converted the bridge into broad gauge standard, using the indigenous technology provided by Structural Engineering Research Centre, Chennai, and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

Lalu to participate

Speaking to The Hindu over phone on Thursday, Divisional Railway Manager Hemant Kumar said besides Ms. Gandhi, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad and Minister of State for Railways R. Velu would participate in the function. Mr. Kumar sai d the inaugural passenger special would be operated from Rameswaram to Chennai on Monday. Regular services would commence from Tuesday.

Two pairs of trains, including express trains, would be operated. Daily express train between Chennai and Rameswaram via Madurai would leave Chennai at 5 p.m. and reach Rameswaram at 5.15 a.m. the next day. In the return direction, the train would start at 10.30 p.m. and reach Chennai at 11.15 a.m. next day.

The Madurai-Rameswaram passenger train would leave Madurai at 6.30 a.m. and reach Rameswaram at 10.30 a.m. It would leave Rameswaram at 6 p.m. and reach Madurai at 9.45 p.m. One more passenger train would run between Madurai and Rameswaram daily.

Confirming the programme, District Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar said security measures would be initiated immediately in view of the visit of Ms. Gandhi and others.
