CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has asked the Director of Teacher Education to be present in court on August 9 in connection with a contempt of court proceedings initiated against him. Justice Prabha Sridevan gave the direction on Thursday, after the Dharmapuri district-based Jesus Christ Teacher Training Institute for Women filed the contempt petition saying the official had wilfully delayed implementation of the court’s orders dated September 26, 2006. Though the official was directed to pass orders within four weeks and a copy of the order was furnished to him in October 2006, he did not pass any order, thereby committing contempt of the orders of the court, the petitioner said. The judge said: “It is seen that the officers, who are directed by this court to pass orders within a time frame do not think that the time frame has to be adhered to. They take several months or a year. After the contempt petition is filed, they come forward with an order and hope that the contempt petition will be closed.” “I do not intend to do this. The officer shall be personally present in the court on August 9 and file an affidavit explaining the circumstances of delay,” Mrs. Justice Prabha Sridevan said in her order.
