AIDWA hails action against Dera chief

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has welcomed the filing of charges by the Central Bureau of Investigation against the Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh for rape and murder.

The Dera chief was surrounded by controversies and he suppressed them through political manipulations and power games, an AIDWA statement said. In 2001, a girl living in the Dera with her brother wrote to some newspapers and the AIDWA alleging rape, it said.

“We took up the matter, reported it to police, and presented her letter to the National Human Rights Commission. But as the girl could not present herself due to threats to her life, the matter could not be pursued,” the statement said. The girl’s brother and the editor of a newspaper, who raised the issue were murdered, the statement alleged. The AIDWA demanded strong action against the Dera chief for sexual exploitation.
