Flowing filth: Effluents flowing into Perumalmalai area, merging with Cauvery River. —

ERODE: Despite the warning by the district administration, the pollution control department and also the Madras High Court, huge quantities of effluents are being discharged by some textile dyers into River Cauvery.

Erode has more than 40 tanneries and 500 and odd textile dyeing industries. Farmers complain that most of these discharge huge quantities of effluents into Kalingarayan Canal and River Cauvery.

A suit has been filed in the Madras High Court which has directed the tanners and the dyers to erect reverse osmosis (RO) plants in their units and ensure zero.

The industries were also directed by the court that till the RO plants were erected they should not spoil the ground water and the surroundings. In Perumalmalai and surrounding areas, huge quantities of effluents flow for about a kilometer before merging with River Cauvery. Farmers in the area said the effluents damaged ground water level. Similarly, in Vendipalayam area, huge quantities of effluents flow into the drains and mix with Kalingarayan Canal. Farmers’ associations complained to the district administration that in Kadirampatty and surrounding areas more than 10 small and medium textile printing units were started recently and enormous quantities of effluents were discharged by the textile industries into Perumpallam odai. The farmers complained that because of this drinking water sources of three schools and two colleges were affected.
