Nairobi: Kenya’s Health Minister was arrested on Thursday night for going to help a women’s rights activist who was reportedly being roughed up by police for protesting against a plan to award MPs a £45,000 bonus. Charity Ngilu, one of President Mwai Kibaki’s most visible Cabinet Ministers, is accused of helping Ann Njogu, director of the Centre for Rights Education, to “escape” from police custody. Ms. Ngilu forced police to release the activist and drove her to hospital. Police summoned Ms. Ngilu and arrested her. — © Guardian Newspapers Limited, 2007
