“For success, mind matters”

MADURAI: “Rural background or poverty should not be a deterrent for students since it is only the mind that matters most for success,” Collector S.S. Jawahar said here on Friday. Many people from poor economic background had made it big in life.

He was addressing students from across the State at a “Contact programme for talented Plus One students,” organised by Yadava College with support from the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi. Mr. Jawahar said many youth were found lacking in self-confidence. At the same time, self-confidence should not turn into “over-confidence.” “Youngsters from villages and low income families always get dejected. Do not give space for negative thoughts because there are people such as the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who have reached great heights in life despite hailing from small towns.” Later, in an interaction with the students, the Collector answered questions on the secret of success.

R. Rengan, Principal in-charge, Yadava College, said the 15-day residential programme was to help students choose the right path for a career in science.

P.S. Navaraj, principal coordinator, said the contact programme would expose the students to basic sciences and opportunities available in nanotechnology, bio-informatics, biotechnology etc. “Parents and students prefer only engineering and medicine these days. If that trend continues, basic sciences and research will be at peril.”

A.R. Chandran, correspondent, and N. Kannan, director (self-finance courses), were among those who spoke. About 50 students from various schoools are participating in this programme.
