Surprise package: A granite tank recovered from the traffic island at Poojappura during renovation works on Friday.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A granite tank unearthed from the traffic island at the Poojappura junction during renovation work on Friday led to speculation about an archaeological find, generating curiosity among passers-by and residents. Workers chanced upon the six-foot long tank during excavation. They informed the contractors who in turn relayed the information to the Corporation authorities. After the earth was scraped off, the side of the tank revealed the number 8 and two lines in English. The first line read SPCA and the second one read ‘Presented by P. Sabharama Row’. Mayor C. Jayan Babu and Town Planning committee chairman R. Satheeshkumar visited the site to view the tank. Mr. Satheeshkumar said the sculpted tank might have been used to give water to cattle. He said the English letters on the tank discounted the possibility of archaeological significance. Similar stone tanks were found in other parts of the city. Special place
Mr. Satheeshkumar said the contractors would be asked to mount the tank on a concrete base and place it strategically on the renovated traffic island.
