HYDERABAD: Lanco Institute of General Humanitarian Trust (LIGHT), the corporate social responsibility division of the Lanco Group, and Geneva-based International Organisation for Migration (IOM) on Friday signed an agreement to help survivors of trafficking and other vulnerable people below the poverty line. Director-General of IOM Brunson McKinley and LIGHT chairman and Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal signed the agreement. It marks the beginning of a series of initiatives in the rehabilitation and empowerment of victims of commercial sex exploitation, trafficking and other vulnerable groups, like mathammas, joginis and Dalits. Mr. McKinley said IOM was the principal inter-governmental organisation in the field of migration. It was dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. IOM worked with Government, NGOs and corporates in promoting international cooperation on migration issues, searching for practical solutions and providing aid to needy migrants. Mr. Rajagopal said initially the activities would be confined to Vijayawada, where a sizable chunk of hapless women were into trafficking. Gradually, the programme would be extended to other parts of the country. Anne Marie Buschman-Petit, Specialist Adviser to Director-General, Ovais Sarmad, Director, Resource Management, and Nagasayee Malathy, Project Manager, IOM, India, and Suresh Chukkapalli, Managing Trustee, LIGHT, were present.
