It’s raining revenue for transport wing

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Transport Department has every reason to feel elated. Its revenue collections has increased by more than 25 per cent generating an amount of Rs.564.22 crore during first seven months of 2007 when compared to its corresponding period revenue of Rs.462.48 crore.

Of the total Rs.564.22 crore, officials had collected Rs.233 crore as quarterly tax from transport carriage vehicles, Rs.209 crore as life tax, Rs.44 crore as registration, licence and renewal fee and Rs.31.5 crore from stringent enforcement drive followed by other charges. The department has generated a whopping Rs.1, 370 crore during the financial year 2005-06 and expect to surpass it this year by a mile. The steep rise in number of vehicles was the main reason for the increase in revenue collections. Almost 1,000 vehicles of different categories were being registered at different RTA offices everyday.

RTA offices in Hyderabad themselves have collected Rs.157.4 crore from January to July this year.

The department would be able to achieve its target of generating Rs.1, 800 crore in revenue this financial year if the current trend is maintained, said Transport Commissioner Ajay Misra.
