BJP plans stir against SEZs

HYDERABAD: The BJP’s State unit on Friday accused the Government of converting the special economic zones (SEZs) into ‘real estate ventures’ and announced launching of an agitation on the issue.

Party president Bandaru Dattatreya and former Union Minister Ch.Vidyasagar Rao said at a press conference here that 44 of the 60 proposed SEZs in the State had received formal approval, nine secured in-principle nod and seven were awaiting the go-ahead. They alleged that 32,585 acres were being alienated for SEZs which were being sanctioned to people with ‘little or no background in industry’.

Terming it the ‘biggest scam’ in the country, the leaders said people in 15 villages were displaced to make way for an SEZ near Kakinada. They demanded farmers be made partners in developing the zones. They said the party would organise a State-level workshop on SEZs here on August 5.

Firing issue

They hit out at Congress and TDP on Mudigonda issue. The incident had failed to “enlighten” the Chief Minister while the Telugu Desam had no moral right to talk of ‘bhoo poratam’, as it never attached importance to land distribution when in power, they said.
