good turnout: People celebrating ‘Aadi Perukku’ at Tiruvaiyaru near Thanjavur on Friday.
TIRUCHI: With the Cauvery flowing in full spate, hundreds of men, women and children thronged various bathing ghats of Ammamandapam in Srirangam, Upper Anicut in Mukkombu and other places on Friday to celebrate the bounty the river brings with her on the occasion of ‘Adi Perukku’ festival. Pujas performed
In what is considered as a thanksgiving ceremony to Mother Cauvery, women after bathing in the river, performed ‘pujas’ lighting the traditional lamps, camphor and breaking coconuts. It was a joyous occasion for the newly-wed who offered the garlands they had used at the time of solemnising their marriages, as the festival marks fertility and reproduction. Farmers from different parts of Tiruchi, Perambalur and Pudukottai donated paddy harvested during last season, to the economically weaker section at Ammamandapam, invoking the blessings of Cauvery for an abundant harvest during the forthcoming ‘samba’ season. Taken out in procession
Sri Namperumal, the processional deity of Sri Ranganathaswamy temple, was taken out in a procession to Ammamandapam where the ritual of offering garland to Mother Cauvery was performed in the evening. Fire-fighting and police personnel, deployed at Ammamandapam and Mukkombu and other bathing ghats, ensured smooth conduct of the festival.
