TIRUCHI: Work on four-laning of Tiruchi-Thanjavur section of National Highway 67 will be completed by October 2008, the Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, T. R. Baalu, has said.

“Though the project is scheduled to be completed in June 2009, I have asked the National Highways Authority of India and the contractor to complete it ahead of schedule,” Mr. Baalu told reporters after inspecting the progress of the work here on Friday.

The 56-km-long stretch is being four-laned at a cost of about Rs. 280 crore under the build- operate-and-transfer (BOT) basis. The project includes the laying of a four-km-long by-pass at Vallam.

Three new road overbridges will come across the railway crossings at Tiruverambur, Ariyamangalam and Vilar. Two major bridges across the Mudalaimuthu Vari and Kallanai Kalvai and 21 minor bridges are to be constructed under the project. Service lanes will be laid for about 32 km on both sides of the road.

Mr. Baalu instructed the officials to take up construction of minor bridges and culverts simultaneously.

Answering a query, he said that there was no major problem in acquisition of land for the project. A couple of minor issues in fixing the value of some buildings would be sorted out by the month end.

Mr. Baalu said that the Tiruchi-Karaikudi section of the Tiruchi-Rameswaram National Highway 210 would be four-laned. The project report for the four-laning of the Karaikudi-Ramanathapuram section was being prepared. All other four-laning projects in the State were progressing as per schedule, he said.
