Priya Dutt meets Sonia

NEW DELHI: Amid efforts to get relief for her embattled brother Sanjay Dutt, Congress MP Priya Dutt met party president Sonia Gandhi here on Friday.

Priya did not speak to reporters after the meeting, which took place against the backdrop of growing pleas in the Congress that the party stand by Sunil Dutt’s family “which epitomises the values of secularism and national integration”.

Earlier, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and his deputy Sriprakash Jaiswal met Ms. Gandhi.

Prior to the meeting, Priya said her family was exploring the possibilities of getting relief for Sanjay, now in Pune’s Yerwada Jail after being sentenced to six-year rigorous imprisonment by a special court in Mumbai for illegally possessing an AK-56 rifle and a 9mm pistol.

“We are seeing what could be the best legal recourse for him. Our main focus is to see what we can do to get relief for him,” Priya told reporters.

Union Minister Kapil Sibal said the Congress should stand by the Dutt family in this hour of “stress and trouble”.
