Kochi: Newcomers on campuses have some good news. Aimed at checking ragging with an iron hand, educational institutions in the city are gearing up to launch anti-ragging squads. The Cochin University of Science and Technology announced last week that the squads would closely monitor the activities of freshers and senior students. The move comes in the wake of a Supreme Court directive that immediate measures should be implemented on campuses against ragging. A committee headed by R.K. Raghavan, former Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation, had recommended that higher education institutions must keep an intense watch on students having negative entries in their school-leaving certificates. Non-compliance with the directives against ragging in any manner whatsoever should be considered as lowering of academic standards by the errant institution. The Kochi city police authorities said the regulatory authorities must proceed against such errant institutions by imposing the prescribed penalties already provided under their respective statutes/regulations, which they would otherwise have exercised in matters lowering academic standards. City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham said the police would cooperate with the heads of educational institutions in drives against ragging. Awareness campaigns would help in keeping a tab on ragging-related issues on the campuses, he said. Sheela Paul, Principal of Maharaja’s College, said the disciplinary committees on the campus would try to avoid incidents of ragging on the campus.
