PUDUCHERRY: It is common knowledge that vegetables, fruits, rice and pulses are sold by the kilo, but crockery! At the shopping mela at Jayaram Thirumana Nilayam near Balaji Theatre imported American microwave-safe melamine crockery are being sold at Rs. 210 a kilo. You can pick different pieces and mix-and-match them to get a complete set, which will then be weighed and priced accordingly. The exhibition, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on July 30, will be on till August 5. The Chief Minister lit a nine-foot-long incense stick made by Cycle Brand Agarbathis to mark the inauguration. Stalls of the District Industries Centre with handicraft items also finds place in the expo. The stall has wooden birds that can be hung from the ceiling, scented candles, batik dupattas, handkerchiefs and wall hangings made by the women of Thiruvandarkoil. Chappathi makers, vaccum cleaners, cosmetic itemsand taste makers have also been put up for sale here. A small semi-automatic washing machine that can wash clothes weighing about one kilo was also on display. The basement housed stalls selling and exhibiting items from the Pondicherry Cooperative Building Centre, Cycle Brand Agarbathis, Can Fin Homes and the LIC.
