New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for adopting ‘delaying tactics’ in a case relating to allotment of land to a private company for parking area. Observing that the case was adjourned several times because of the MCD stand, a Bench of Chief Justice M. K. Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Khanna asked the civic agency to pay the amount to the Delhi High Court Lawyers’ Welfare Fund within four weeks. Earlier, the court had asked the Corporation to file a status report giving details about the parking area maintained by it in the Okhla Industrial Area. The court also wanted to know on what basis the agency had floated the tender inviting private companies to use the land as parking lot. Despite repeated orders, the agency failed to file any report or affidavit in this connection but the MCD counsel on Saturday suddenly informed the court that the land did not belong to it. The High Court was hearing a petition filed by Ashima Securities Pvt. Ltd through its counsel B. L. Wali alleging that MCD had allotted a plot to it in Okhla Industrial Area to be used as parking area but later it withdrew saying that the land belonged to Commissioner of Industries. --PTI
