Central team visits Palakkad district

Makes on-the-spot assessment of rain damage


Collector submits report on damage

Team holds discussions with officials


PALAKKAD: A team of officials of the Central Government visited the Nelliampathy Hills and the Ayilur grama panchayat in the district on Saturday.

The team, headed by Chathopadhaya, Joint Secretary, Central Secretariat, visited Cherunelly at Nelliampathy to make an on-the-spot study of the damage in the natural calamity. They also visited Kayaradi village in Ayilur grama panchayat.

The team held discussions with the officials of the district headed by District Collector K.S. Sreenivas at Vadakkumchery Tourist Bungalow before visiting the affected areas.

The Collector submitted a report of the damage caused by flood and other natural calamity. The report said that 10 people, including four children, died in the heavy rain, flood and landslips. The total loss estimated in the district is to the tune of Rs.93 crore. In the calamity, 4,448 hectares of agricultural land was destroyed affecting 13,943 farmers. The loss in the agriculture sector is estimated to be Rs.18.14 crore.

Houses destroyed

In the flood, 135 houses were destroyed and 10,622 were damaged. The loss is estimated to be Rs.1.35 crore.

The report of the Collector said that 65 km of the National Highway and 69 km of the State Highway, 60 km of district roads and 1,086 km of village roads were damaged in the flood. The total loss is estimated to be Rs.67 crore.

The damage to the irrigation canals of Malampuzha, Kanjirapuzha, Pothundy and Chitturpuzha is estimated to be Rs.26.65 crore. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) suffered a loss of Rs.123 lakh and the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) Rs.10 lakh.

The loss due to the damage of bridges is estimated to be Rs.53 lakh. The Central team leader said that they would submit the report to the Central Government immediately after their return to Delhi.

The others in the team are Joise Mathew, Regional Director, Family Welfare, Akambaran, Superintending Engineer, Central Road Transport Ministry and R.K. Varma of the Power Ministry.
