Health hazard: Poor sanitation in Cooperative Colony has led to breeding of mosquitoes, in Krishnagiri. —

Krishnagiri: Poor sanitary conditions in Cooperative Colony in Krishnagiri town have become a major cause for concern.

An outbreak of water-borne diseases looms large due to the prevailing unhygienic conditions in most of the residential areas here.

Drainage channels in several parts of the town are heavily clogged owing to poor maintenance.

Rain

In many places, wastewater overflows from the channels during rain, making it even worse and creating conditions for mosquitoes to breed in stagnant water.

Sanitary workers of the municipality rarely turn up to remove garbage and clean the drainage channels.

Though repeated representations were made to authorities concerned, nothing concrete has emerged till date, residents claimed.

Shortage

Removal of accumulated garbage on a daily basis happens very rarely due to shortage of sanitary workers to carry out this task in various places.

In addition to this, a number of commercial establishments are dumping the garbage on the roadside instead of handing it over to workers who come with garbage collection vehicles to take away discarded material.

Rampant complaints also prevail on sanitary workers merely setting fire to the accumulated garbage instead of removing it, in order to make their work easy.

Shortage of sanitary workers is said to be the reason for the poor sanitary conditions that prevail in the locality.

The execution of solid waste management in many wards has been pending for long. The municipality should initiate steps to implement underground drainage system in the town at the earliest.

It is hoped that the municipality would come up with an effective plan in managing the disposal of wastewater and garbage to make the town clean, say sources.
