No benefit from copra procurement guidelines

Modern agricultural implements for coconuts required

Krishnagiri: Members of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam (TNVS) affiliated to the Communist Party of India (M) staged a demonstration in front of the Uzhavar Sandhai here on Saturday in protest against the plummeting price of coconuts.

The guidelines for procurement of copra are not beneficial to farmers.

As a result of this situation, the State Government should procure coconuts from farmers and fix the procurement price of coconut kernel at Rs.45 a kg.

Losses

However, if the Government did not come to the rescue, farmers would end up with huge losses, they claimed.

The State Government should provide modern agricultural implements to farmers for tapping coconuts. The Government should also provide a subsidy of 90 percent to coconut farmers for installation of micro irrigation facilities.

It should initiate steps to launch industries in the cooperative sector for diversified coconut products. The yield has also come down drastically due to mite attack on coconuts.

The Government should provide compensation of Rs.2,000 a coconut tree that was affected due to pest attack and drought, they added. District Secretary S. Varadarasalu led the demonstration.
