All SMILES: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy blesses a girl, who greeted him on the occasion of his 58th birthday in Puducherry on Saturday.
PUDUCHERRY: The 58th birthday celebrations of Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy here on Saturday saw people from all walks of life visiting his house on Pillayar Koil Street in his constituency to wish him. The crowd started quite early in the morning, and we even had a young boy, a pagal vesha kaaran, dressed as Hanuman come to take pictures with the Chief Minister. Almost everyone from his constituency was there and both young and old were seen falling at his feet and taking his blessings. Mr. Rangasamy, who received his guests on the first floor of his house, had a smile for everyone, shook hands and accepted whatever they offered. Some people even smeared holy ash on his forehead and blessed him. There was this group of young girls – Revathy, Sharmila, Sudha, Radha, Jaya, Malathi, Shankari, Uma, Latha, Ezhilarasi – who had petitioned him for a better job. They had taken a day’s leave from their regular job to greet Mr. Rangasamy. About 40 children from Shanmugapuram had come to thank the Chief Minister for giving them free chappals, books, uniforms, noon meals and milk. The children when asked why they were at his house, listed all these and said “he has done so much for us, so we came to wish him.” Tamil Nadu Ministers Durai Murugan and M.R.K. Paneerselvam, who were on their way to a function in Cuddalore, former Chief Minister R.V. Janakiraman, Speaker R. Radhakrishnan, Deputy Speaker A.V. Sreedharan, Whip Namassivayam, Social Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy, MLAs Bussy Anand and R. K. R. Anantharaman greeted him on his birthday. Cut-out keepers tried to outdo each other, and this year the hoardings had been put up in the town area as well. There were those in which the Chief Minister had been featured in a karate dress, as Chatrapathi Sivaji, as one leading Puducherry into the future, in a coat and tie among others. Annadanams were conducted and Mr. Rangasamy visited various temples.
