The Mother instinct is the deepest one in any living being because the very origin and continuity of life is very much connected with a mother.
Mary is the mother of the Church not only because she is the mother of Jesus Christ, but also because she shines as the model of virtues of the whole human race.
The Miraculous statue of Our Lady of Snows has been in our town since 9th June 1555.
The beautiful statue which was looked at with awe and wonder by St. Francis Xavier, was earlier kept in a chapel in a Convent of the Augustinian Sisters in Manila, Philippines.
Today, Mother Mary shines, her glory through the Miraculous statue, drawing pilgrims of all religions, and showering her graces bountifully on all people alike. Mother is fondly called in Portuguese - ’Senhora, Das Navis’, which means Our Lady of Snows.
She has been given the unique title of Mother of Refuge. Pilgrims who flock at the Basilica experience the protection, love and warmth of the Mother. Our Mother, the Queen of Heaven and Earth will bless all those who go to her for refuge. We honour Mother with ’The Golden Car’, an explica of the sacredness and the magnificient manifestation of our Mother.
It may be described as the Heavenly abode of the Holy Trinity coming on earth as the Heavenly Jerusalem, carrying the Divine Mother, the Mother of the Great Multitude, to the human Race.
