Southern Railway (Chennai) wins title

ICF was awarded the Kanagamani Ammal memorial Trophy


Madurai: Southern Railway (Chennai) lifted the Rajamani memorial Trophy for the fourth time in a row defeating Integral Coach Factory (Chennai) 4-3 in the tie-breaker in the final of the 15th annual State-level hockey tournament, organised by the Reserve Line Sports Club, at the Madurai Police Centenary Stadium here on Saturday.

The teams were locked goalless at regulation time. ICF was awarded the Kanagamani Ammal memorial Trophy. It was a well–contested final and the exchanges were even, but the game was defence-oriented.

No team even came very near scoring except on one occasion when Rajendra Prasad of ICF, having only goalkeeper Suresh to beat, scooped the ball high over the post.

In the tie-breaker, Gautham, Ganesh, Jagath Jothi and Dixon scored for Southern Railway. Ramesh Babu, Yuvaraj Jr. and Karthick scored for ICF.

The play-off match for the third place between Indian Bank and AGORC ended in a goalless draw and in the tie-breaker, Indian Bank won 4-2 to lift the Mamotharan memorial Trophy.

Earlier in the semifinals, Southern Railway and ICF edged past Indian Bank and AGORC respectively by identical 2-1 margins.

Special awards: Goalkeeper: Meenakshi Sundaran (AGORC); Fullback: Santhana Krishnan (ICF); Midfielder: Kumar (Indian Bank); Forward: Arumugam (S. Rly.); Promising y oungster: Kannan (Indian Bank); Player of the tournament: Rajendran (ICF).

Nest Inn in final

Nest Inn team and GK’s team (Coimbatore) entered the final of the team of four duplicate event in the 45th South Zone bridge championship, on Saturday.

The results: Semifinals: Nest Inn bt Prabha’s (IOC) 74-48; GK’s bt Bangalore Quartz 96-73.

Quarterfinals: Nest Inn bt Tricks 69-38; GK’s bt CV Rao’s 63-18; Bangalore Quartz bt Faria (Hyderabad) 84-20; Prabha’s bt Madhukar 48-25.

Kanyakumari enters the semifinals

Kanyakumari entered the semifinals of the TNCA inter-district under-19 cricket tournament by virtue of its first innings lead over host Madurai as the two-day quarterfinals match ended in a draw at the Agricultural College ground on Friday. D. Vijay Anand (five for 44) helped Kanyakumari dismiss Madurai for 160 in its first innings.

The scores: Kanyakumari 249 and 102 in 39.2 overs (Saju 28 not out, Aussain four for 15) drew with Madurai 160 in 64.5 overs (Manoj 44, Vijay Anand 37, D. Vijay Anand five for 44, Antony Das three for 47) and 123 for five in 14 overs ( Bhagat Sundar 57 not out, Vijay Anand three for 40).

Sarvanan shines

At Sivakasi, Saravanan’s seven for 33 helped Sivagangai defeat host Virudhunagar by 43 runs in the four-team ‘E’ Zone league in the TNCA inter-district under-13 cricket tournament on Saturday.

The scores: Karur 124 in 42.3 overs (K. Arun Kumar 26, Sunil three for 20, Kamal Subbas Chander four for 19) lost to Erode 127 without loss in 23.1 overs (Giri Sudhan 32 not out, Sri Ram Kumar 61 not out).

Sivagangai 120 in 36 overs (Tibi six for 21) bt Virudhunagar 77 in 15.1 overs (R. Saravanan seven for 33).

Friday’s scores: Virudhunagar 158 in 29.4 overs (B. Vijay 40, D. Vijay three for 37, Logesh three for 21) lost to Karur 159 for four in 21.4 overs (Vishanth 70, Venkatesh 32, B. Vijay three for 40).

Sivagangai 106 for nine in 50 overs (Karthikeyan four for 25) lost to Erode 108 for one in 33.1 overs (Giri Sudhan 29 not out, Suriya Prakash 53 not out).

At Tirunelveli: C Zone: Krishnagiri 152 for nine in 50 overs (Hemanth 32 not out, Vignesh 25, Selva Ganesh three for 26) bt Tirunelveli 101 in 32.3 overs (Gautham 22, Shameer Ibrahim 30, Balaji four for 28, Hemanth three for 16).

Cuddalore 119 in 40.3 overs (Aravind 30, Veeramani Kantan three for 18, Kavi Arasan three for 27) lost to Thiruvarur 120 for three in 27.5 overs (Veramanikantan 35 not out).

Friday’s scores: Cuddalore 83 in 38.3 overs (R. Hemanth five for 27, R. Aswath Kalyan three for 19) lost to Krishnagiri 84 for six in 25.3 overs (Sandeep Prabakar four for 36).

Tirunelveli 187 in 48 overs (Sameer Ibrahim 57, A. Tajudeen three for 21) lost to Thiruvarur 189 for nine in 43 overs (G. Sivaraman 26, R. Venkatesh three for 34).
