Aided schools in dire straits

Correspondent

‘Recruitment policy hits school education’

Collector promises aid for more classrooms

Government urged to lift ban on aided teacher posts

Kakinada: Many of the aided schools are now in dire straits because of the Government’s policy of barring the managements from filling teachers posts that fell vacant due to retirement of staff on superannuation, according to Y. Savithri Devi, former MLC and secretary and correspondent of the Sundarimani Guild of Service High School.

At a press conference here on Saturday, she said the six-decades old school, was left with no option except engaging private teachers on the lines of education volunteers paying them meagre sum.

The school that was originally having 10 teachers is now running with five teachers.

The school’s student strength has gone up but the number of teaching staff dwindled. Of the five teachers of elementary section, she said two retired in 2002 and after a prolonged correspondence permission was accorded to recruit two teachers two years later during 2004.

Fresh GO issued

But by the time all the procedures of recruitment were completed, such as constitution of a committee and interview dates were announced, a GO was issued banning fresh appointments. Savithri Devi said the policy of the Government was in no way helpful for promotion of education.

At this rate, she said, the aided schools except those run by corporate bodies would not survive for long. However, Savithri Devi was happy to note that the Collectors being the honorary chairmen of the school were extending their liberal assistance to construction of additional classrooms.

She said Satish Chandra and Jawahar Reddy, the then Collectors, had released Rs. 4 lakhs each to the school and Vanga Geeta Viswanath, former Rajya Sabha member, had earmarked Rs. 4 lakhs to the schools development from her MPLAD funds.

Savithri Devi has appealed to the Government to lift the ban on aided teachers posts.

Ch. Padma, headmistress, said despite facing teachers’ shortage, they were able to secure good results in tenth public examination availing the service of the private teachers.
