BERHAMPUR: Around 5000 kgs of beef was seized from a truck while it was being illegally transported from Cuttack to Andhra Pradesh at Gopalpur square on NH 5 on the outskirts of the city on Saturday. Police and administrative officials including Berhampur tehsildar, Sangram Panda and Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Nitinjit Singh rushed to the spot to prevent the seizure lead to any tension in the city and adjoining areas. Two arrested
Truck driver Srinivas Rao and a person accompanying the illicit cargo Muhammad Salil were arrested. According to them the truck was traveling to Vizianagaram. It may be noted that last year discovery of few kgs of beef had led to violence in the city. Under supervision of a magistrate with tight security the huge amount of beef was buried in a large pit. Administration and police had to be careful as the truck had been stopped by BJP activists on the national highway, who had informed police for legal action. According to Ganjam district BJP Yuvamorcha president, Pradip Satpathy they tracked down the truck basing on information provided by their Cuttack unit. Speaking to newsmen at the spot of seizure, Mr Singh said it needs investigation how this truck loaded with beef could come out of Cuttack and pass several check gates on the highway without any suspicion. Question also arises how can such a large illegal slaughterhouse exist in Cuttack in secret.
