Change in people’s mindset alone can prevent female foeticide: Kiran Bedi

Girl child should not be considered a burden, says the country’s first woman IPS officer

How do you do?: Kiran Bedi, Director-General, Bureau of Police Research and Development, Delhi, interacting with students of DAV School on Saturday.

BHUBANESWAR: Magsaysay award winner and India’s first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi here on Saturday said cases of female foeticide could be prevented only when people changed their mindset.

“People should not consider a girl child as a burden. There are lots of opportunities for girls now to choose a career option. Take my example. We are four sisters but all of us are well established,” Ms. Bedi said.

The senior police officer was addressing hundreds of students and their parents at the 19th Foundation Day celebration of DAV School, Chandrasekharpur here.

Only framing of law was not a solution to prevent the heinous crime, people should come forward to lodge complaint on these incidents, she said, adding then only the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act could be properly implemented.

Advice to students

Earlier, addressing the students, Ms. Bedi said the present education system was developing employability quotient rather than patriotic quotient, which was very much essential for any country to prosper. She advised students to make an attempt to become self-dependent in future.

The country needed reforms, which was only possible if the new generation took the lead in this direction, Ms. Bedi said.

‘Momentary setback’

“Education is for transformation not for transaction,” the senior IPS officer said.

Ms. Bedi, who was recently in the middle of a controversy pertaining to appointment of Commissioner of Police, Delhi, said she was shocked for being overlooked but she had moved ahead in life considering it as a momentary setback.

Bhubaneswar MP Prasanna Patsani and Regional Director, DAV Institutions, H. K Mohanty attended the celebrations.
