DISCUSSION: A. Lakshmi, left, Programme Manager, ADD INDIA, interacting with an SHG leader at Kulathur near Pudukottai on Saturday.
PUDUKOTTAI: A section of physically-challenged persons in various parts of the district, who had sought financial assistance from the tsunami rehabilitation fund, remains a disappointed lot owing to lack of funds. The disabled persons had submitted their applications to the Project Officer (Tsunami) a couple of years ago. While some of them got a relief of Rs.10, 000 each a year ago, others could not More pathetic is the case of those who had floated special self-help groups (comprising both and men and women) in Kunnadarkovil block. A number of physically-challenged persons, who spoke at a sensitisation programme for leaders of the special SHGs, organised by the Action on Disability and Development India (ADD INDIA), a Tiruchi-based service organisation, at Kulathur near here on Saturday said that although a few members of the Special SHGs got the relief several others were left out. The leaders of ‘Pasamalar’ Special SHG and Brahadambal Special SHG, P. Pounudurai, and M. Muthukumar, pointed out that three out of eight members of their groups, who sought the rehabilitation, were denied the relief. Their efforts in getting the relief had become a futile exercise. The Programme Manager, ADD INDIA, A. Lakshmi, pointed out that 321 physically-challenged persons in Kunnadarkovil block had formed 33 special SHGs. The sensitisation programme was aimed at creating an awareness of the legal rights of disabled persons. The disbursement of rehabilitation sum to a section of the disabled had disappointed those who had been denied the same. Collector S. J. Chiru, when contacted, said that since the funds available for the disabled under the Tsunami rehabilitation had been completely utilised, the district administration was exploring the possibility of extending assistance through some other scheme or programme.
