Expedite release of funds for water scheme: forum

Staff Reporter

PUDUKOTTAI: The Pudukottai District Consumers’ Association has urged the State Government to expedite the release of funds for implementation of the ‘Coleroon Surplus Water Scheme’ to divert floodwaters from Tiruchi to Pudukottai district.

A resolution adopted to this effect at the Association’s meeting here recently said that apart from preventing damage to crops and property in and around Tiruchi, the diversion would help irrigate a vast extent of agricultural land in the district. The scheme would also stabilise groundwater table.

Inundation of Tiruchi and Srirangam would be averted, while the storage level in system tanks in Pudukottai district would register an appreciable increase.

The depletion of groundwater table in the district had resulted in the need for deepening borewells, and extraction of underground water from a greater depth had forced the farmers to use high-capacity pump sets. This, in turn, resulted in excessive drawing of power from sub-stations over and above its capacity, the resolution added.

Call to fill posts

The meeting, through another resolution, urged the State Government to fill posts lying in government departments and educational institutions.

A resolution urged the Pudukottai municipality to ensure hygienic environment at the bus stand.

It also pleaded for laying of railway track on Thanjavur-Pudukottai-Madurai sector, announced in the Railway budget.

The president of the Association, M. Srikumar, presided over the meeting. The general secretary, S. Dhanavelu, and the secretary, K. Vezhavendan, were among those who spoke at the meeting.
