Rs. 79 crore allotted for building bridges

NAGAPATTINAM: The State Government has sanctioned Rs.79 crore for construction of 14 bridges and improvement and widening of roads including State highways for a total stretch of 470 km in the district under natural calamities and disaster rehabilitation scheme, said Tenkasi S. Jawahar, Collector, on Saturday.

Talking to media persons after inspecting the desilting of Pillaru and other irrigation channels at Kovilpathu and irrigation tanks in several other villages in Thalainayar block being carried out by engaging workers under the Tamil Nadu Employment Guarantee (TNREG) scheme, he said that the 14 bridges would be built across Nallar, Adappar, Mulliyar, Kaduvaiyar, Vellayar and Uppanar rivers at a cost of Rs.40 crore.

Similarly, several important roads, including Kumbakonam-Sirkazhi, Kilvelur-Kachanam, Tiruthuraipoondi-Vedaranyam, Sembanarkovil-Nalladai and Mayiladuturai-Tiruvarur (State Highways) and Karunganni-Tirukkuvalai, Tiruvengadu-Mayiladuturai-

Poompuhar and other district roads would be widened and improved at a cost of Rs.39 crore.

State scheme

Mr. Jawahar said that thousands of families were benefited by getting employment under Tamil Nadu Rural Employment Guarantee (TNREG) scheme and pointed out that 514 works were completed out of the 1,444 works taken up under the scheme for the current year.

He said that out of the total amount of Rs. 56.86 crore sanctioned (Centre’s Rs.52.78 crore and Tamil Nadu Government’s 4.07 crore) for providing wages under the scheme, the district administration disbursed Rs.47.11 crore as wages benefiting 94,431 families generating 58,898 man-days of work.

The Collector pointed out that 762 irrigation channels and 410 tanks had been desilted in the district under the TNREG scheme at a cost of Rs.8.56 crore to ensure free flow of water to the paddy fields from the Cauvery and Vennar river systems.
