Frothy and frivolous

Surf’s up (English)

Director: Ash Brannon and Chris Buck

Voice cast: Shia LaBeouf, Jeff Bridges

It is surely a strange combination of genres — surfing, animation and the flavour of the season, penguins. Hollywood has had a host of movies about surfers which is a chance to film some extreme action against pretty tropical backdrops. Animation is also huge with singing, dancing anthropomorphic creatures spouting all sorts of self-reflexive pop cultural stuff. And after the Academy Award winning “March of the Penguins,” studios seem to have suddenly woken up to the merchandising gold mine that these birds represent.

“Surf’s up” tells the story of Cody Maverick, a rock penguin, who idolises legendary surfer Big Z. Cody comes to the tropical island of Pen Gu to participate in the Big Z Memorial Surf Off where he has to compete with Tank who has been winning forever. From washed out surfer Geek, Cody learns about love, loss, friendship and the golden mantra that winning is not everything. However, the movie offers nothing new.
