Telugu Ganga project by 2008

TIRUPATI/Nellore: The multi-crore Telugu Ganga project designed to meet the irrigation and drinking water needs of parts of part of Rayalaseema and the Chennai metropolis would become fully operational by September 2008.

This was announced today by the Minister for Major Irrigation, Ponnala Lakshmaiah addressing a public meeting after releasing Telugu Ganga water to Chennai via Srikalahasti and Tirupati from the Kandaleru Reservoir in Nellore district.

According to a pact signed between the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in early 1980s, the State is to supply 5 tmc feet of water from the project to meet the irrigation and drinking water needs of a section of the rain-shadow region of Rayalaseema.

Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, Minister for Information and Public Relations, said that the Chief Minister has agreed in principle for a Rs.857 crore scheme to lay a permanent pipeline to carry Telugu Ganga water. The Engineer-in-Chief has been asked to study the feasibility of the project submitted by TUDA, Reddy said.
